Topic 1

Termites

What is a Formosan termite?

A subterranean termite that the UF/IFAS Extension office says is concentrated in Riverside, Jacksonville, and that forms very large colonies. Once established, it has not been eradicated from an area.

What signs should I look for?

Mud tubes on foundations and tree trunks, cotton-like material on bark, swarmers in spring and soft wood at a sill.

Can I treat termites myself?

Retail products rarely reach a colony this size, and a spray can push it to a new route. A certified operator should do the treatment.

Why does the plan include the trees?

Because the Extension brochure says Formosan nests are split between buildings and trees.

Topic 2

Mosquitoes

When is mosquito season?

The City of Jacksonville lists activity from about the end of April to the end of September.

Is the city mosquito program free?

The city's Mosquito Control Division says its service is free to residents across Duval County.

How do I request a city inspection?

Call the division or file online, with the address, the date and what you saw.

What did the health department advise?

The Florida Department of Health issued mosquito-borne illness advisories for Duval in past wet seasons, including 2024.

Topic 3

Licensing and paperwork

Who licenses pest control in Florida?

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, under Chapter 482 of the Florida Statutes.

What is a certified operator?

The person who does the work, certified for it. A licensed business needs one.

Can I see the license number?

Yes. It is given on request by phone, and you can check it with the department.

Is the license number printed on the site?

No, for the privacy of the company that does the work.

Topic 4

Homes, rentals and claims

Does homeowner insurance cover termite damage?

A standard policy generally excludes termite and vermin damage. The policy wording decides the result, and the Florida Department of Financial Services, Division of Consumer Services handles complaints.

What should a landlord keep on file?

The move-in and move-out records, each inspection and treatment record, the repair invoices and each tenant report.

Is a clean inspection a guarantee?

No. It describes what was seen and reached on the day. Monitoring is how the record is kept current.

Should a new home be pretreated?

It is worth discussing with the builder, since the soil is open before the slab is poured.
